While I think 'the real mummybot' is unnecessarily rude, and his/her assertion that HDTV causes climate change is unsubstantiated and, therefore, also weak, a good point is being made.

HDTV will help fuel climate change - my memory is poor but I think that it will take the annual output of a small hydro station just to power the box top sets we will all require, and that doesn't include the power sucked up by the tv sets themselves. With the decision made unilaterally by gov't, there was no public debate of this hidden consequence of what's being touted as a necessary development for NZ's technological future. The lack of discussion is especially ironic within the context of Clark's 'aspirations' for climate neutrality.

But the real (and useful) point raised by 'the real mummybot' is that your too loose intro to this blog has unhelpfully distracted attention from the guts of your argument about the appropriateness/need for gov't intervention on particular issues. It's a discussion that's well worth having, and I can see the parallel you're trying to draw between HDTV and cc, but your challengeable assertions right upfront divert the debate you're trying to have.

In my humble opinion... : )

HDTV does cause climate change, but I still think the comparison is valid. This isn't an article about what the causes are, rather highlighting the need (and possibility) for strong government intervention when tackling climate change.
