Sydney is BIG

Time spent with the Demmocks family in the sprawling suburbs of Sydney.

The next leg of my tour has me meeting the Demmocks extended family. I flew to Sydney to visit Graeme’s (who I lived with in Hataitai) sisters Keryn and Megan, who had just given brith to a baby boy Zack a few days before I got there. Lo and behold Graeme sent me a text to say he was coming to see Zack. I promptly asked Keryn when he was staying until. Being a surprise, she was surprised. Graeme was happily angry.Sydney at night

The first night off the plane Keryn and her man Mike picked me up from Sydney airport. We drove to their house in Penrith which was a 2.5 hour drive. Graeme then turned up and as the others were going to bed we drove back into town for some boy racing. Graeme had borrowed Megan’s 3.0 litre Toyota Supra. And it was racing car red so it went even faster (the one below is a picture I found off the web). We drove for another 1.5 hours back into Sydney, lapped King’s Cross and the harbour bridge, took three photos and drove back to his mother Cynthia’s place in the Blue Mountains - another 2 hours driving.

The following day I woke up to the first sunny day I had seen in Australia. Melbourne did not put on the weather for me, but it is a very livable city. I met Nina and Pop, Keryn and G’s grandparents who were lovely and very accommodating. I can get my clothes washed there or food anytime. Graeme and I drove a quick 20 minutes down the road to Tutti Frutti, which is a cafe that Cynthia owns and runs. After chilling there for a few hours we then drove for 45 minutes to the hospital where Megan was staying. Poor Zack had jaundice and he looked very tanned and healthy from all the time spent under the sun lamp. I met Chris for the first time, Megan’s very handy other half, as well as Dave and Marie (Mr Demmocks and stepmum). Keryn turned up a bit later and we drove for another 30 minutes back to her place where we chilled for the rest of the evening.

On Tuesday Graeme and I drove for 2 hours (I’m sure you are getting the hint by now) to Wollongong to meet his brother Ryan who is studying Nanotechnology at Tafe Universtity. We had a lovely cafe lunch right in the beach and drove around his campus looking for first years to holler at (no we didn’t holler). It was then a 2 hour drive back to Keryn’s place where we then drove 10 minutes (yes - only around the corner!) to their Uncle Dale’s for dinner. Dale lives in Penrith yet owns four boats on trailers parked at his section. He doesn’t even like boats.

The following day Keryn had Uni so Graeme and I drove an hour back to Tutti Frutti to help out his Uncle Gordon, who was delivering a portable kitchen on the back of a truck for the cafe. Chris tore up the place in his personal Tonka truck. After the destructive festivities Cynthia and Gordon dropped Graeme and I at the airport - the last 2.5 hour drive.

This wasn’t the my first time to Sydney and I have previously done a lot of the touristy things: Manly beach, Luna park, the Harbour Bridge, Darling Harbour etcetra etcetera. I thought I would get to know the suburbs a bit more and as by my lengthy detail of drive here, do this, drive there, do that. Well by the end of it… Melbourne is looking like a very livable city.

I almost forgot, do watch the Queen! Helen Mirren is great!

So much driving in Sydney reminds me of the story about the Kiwi and American farmers having a chat. The Yank kept going on and on and on about how long it took him to get from one end of his farm to the other - literally days of driving. Kiwi fella says “yeah, I used to have a car like that once”.

Hope it didn’t rain all day for your birthday. And that your 28th year had an auspicious beginning.

    Love ya.

I miss you guys too - I ‘almost’ miss work, but not quite.

Birthday was random - spent playing UNO in a backpackers. But then that is the price you pay for being in a foreign country.
