I sold my soul to the highest bidder in London Town

So I gave in.

Belgium was a great home with amazing people and amazing history. I put myself in a situation which if you had asked me more than a year ago I would never have predicted. And I wasn’t doing the typical New Zealand ‘Overseas Experience’ of going to London, pissing up with other Kiwis, travelling to Paris, Rome and the South of France to experience Europe, meeting my future partner and coming back to New Zealand to start a family.

But I can’t speak Dutch. It got pretty frustrating not having a clue about the office politics, or the jokes at drunken pub outings. One on one, everybody would speak English which I appreciated. But when a person in the office left and I only noticed a month later, well that is really annoying. To my credit I ordered a ‘teach yourself Dutch’ book and CD. Unfortunately the book store rung me to tell me of its arrival only three weeks before I was due to leave. “Yes of course I will come in and pick them up as soon as I can”. I think the Belgian authorities will be looking for me next time I cross the border. Time to travel to Englishland.

I landed in London with three interviews lined up on the Monday, I was offered two jobs on Tuesday and started work on Wednesday. People keep asking me how I managed to land so fast on my feet - but the number of recruitment agents which contacted me over the weeks before and after I arrived made it inevitable.

BBC Worldwide were the lucky winners to get me, which is the BBC department not in controversy or turmoil. I get to work on TopGear, Goodfood, Gardener’s World and a plethora of other websites. Apparently I should have heard of all of these shows - not being British has meant that I have missed them completely. BBC Worldwide has also procured The LonelyPlanet, so it is possible that I will get a chance to work on that as well (a very long shot).

So my plans for studying have gone temporarily on hold. I am desperate to get back to University but given that Front End Developers (the technical term for what I do) are in hot demand in London at the moment, I am going to stay and work for a bit. After a year or so I will be able to buy a house back in New Zealand and study to my hearts content :)

Ven I read this post. I became sorely disappointed. My appointment followed soon afterwards however, at which moment I discovered an undiscovered leaky sieve underneath the left cuff of my favorite shirt. With only moments to spare before the attendance of the said appointment was expecteded of me, I quickly fashioned together, out of an old newspaper and a pair of pliers, this post, which you are now wasting your time on.
